Painting CabinetNow doors

I’m painting and installing CabinetNow doors in the jack and jill bathroom.  I always get questions about paint and my airless sprayer so I’m going to share some painting FAQs today too. Y’all, this post is an organic advertisement. CabinetNow.com provided these doors for me to use in my Jack and Jill bathroom.   Thank you for your […]

Seasonal Simplicity Fall Home Tour

Seasonal Simplicity Fall Home Tour: Family Room

Today, I’m teaming up with some blog friends for a “Seasonal Simplicity” Fall Home Tour. (You can find the entire tour lineup at the end of this post.) If you’re new here (or visiting from My Fabuless Life), welcome! I’m Erin, and I am a maker and boy mom who loves to decorate. When it comes to seasonal decorating, “simplicity” sums up my philosophy and style perfectly.

I decided to add a few fall touches to our family room in the form of some Trader Joe’s pumpkins and a couple of black glitter trees on our mantel. I also moved our antler bowl full of gilded pine cones in here and put them on the little table in front of the fireplace. Simple. Done.

Sometimes a few simple touches are all you need.

The pinecones came from the yard and I just used some Liquid Leaf to gild them.

I still haven’t added a photo to that little frame on the shelf, but one of these days I’ll get around to it! By the way, you can see our family room “before and after” from last year here.

The things on the shelves are a mixed of thrifted items, hand me-downs (the wooden box came from my Grandma and has some of my dad’s old toy cars inside), and things we’ve accumulated over the years. I added the birch tree wallpaper to the back of the shelves using thumb tacks so I can remove it whenever I want something else.

DIY Wooden Halloween Candy Bin

Learn how to make a DIY wooden Halloween candy bin with an abstract design!

I don’t typically go all out with Halloween decor, but I thought it would be fun to make something new, so I decided to build a DIY wooden Halloween candy bin. The abstract design allows for it to be used for storage all year round, but the black makes it perfect for Halloween. Today I’ll share all the details in case you’d like to make one too! I also think it would be fun to use a bunch of different colors and use it for office storage, toy storage, etc.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Plaid®. All opinions are my own.

Supply List:

  • Apple Barrel® Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Paint 16 Color Set (I used Black, but this is a great starter kit which will come in handy for all sorts of projects.)
  • Paint Brush
  • 1/4 boards (3, cut to 11″ long for the bottom; 4, cut to fit the sides; 2 cut to fit the front and back; approx 12.5″)
  • Pocket Hole Jig and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws (or you could use connecting brackets to join the boards)
  • Brad nailer and 1 1/4″ brad nails (or a hammer and nails)
  • Wood Glue
  • Painter’s Tape
  • 2 Cabinet Pulls
  • Drill
  • Saw

First, let’s talk about this paint set. I love Apple Barrel paint because it’s so family-friendly and easy to clean up, and this multi-surface formula produces the same results as the original but can be used on things like tin, terra cotta, paper mache, canvas, wood, plaster, fabric, concrete, rigid plastic, ceramics, and glass. It’s for indoor and outdoor use and is dishwasher-safe. The kit comes with 16 colors, and right now there is an amazing promotion going on:

Use coupon code PROMOABMS1 to get the 16 color set for just $19.99 – 25% off of retail! Limited availability and offer expires when the kit is sold out or by 10/31/17. Plus get FREE ground shipping when you buy 2 or more!  See site for exclusions and details.

How to Make a DIY Wooden Halloween Candy Bin

First, cut your boards to your desired dimensions. I cut 3 1×4 boards to 11 inches long and joined them together using pocket hole screws to form the bottom of the candy bin. Then, I used 2 boards joined together in the same way for each side, cutting them to fit. I used 2 boards joined together for the front and the back also, cutting them to fit too. Sand everything well.

I used wood glue and my brad nailer to attach the sides and front and back. A hammer and nails would also work. I patched over the nail holes with wood putty.

Next, I measured and drilled holes on two sides of the bin for my handles. Here’s a tip: Use painter’s tape to mark how far apart you need your holes to be, then stick the tape on your surface and drill straight through where you marked your holes.

Then, I created an abstract pattern with painter’s tape around the outside of the entire bin.

I painted over the entire outside of the bin using black paint, covering all of the tape.

When the paint had dried, I peeled the tape off.

I screwed the handles on the sides, added candy, and now I’m ready for some Trick-or-Treaters!

Check the Frost Line Before Digging Footings

frost line digging
If you’re going to build your own deck one of the first considerations after you’ve laid out your posts is how deep your footings should be set. This is determined by the frost line in your area and the map below (courtesy of Home Depot Outdoor Projects) should give you a general idea of how deep you need to go.

frost-line-depth-map.jpg
The bottom of your footings should sit 6 inches below the frost line so the posts won’t shift as the ground freezes and thaws. You should also check your local building codes and call the city and speak to someone in the engineering department just to be certain of how deep do dig.

If you find yourself in the cold zone, it might be best to hold off on your project until late spring. The weather will also be more tolerable to finish your project.

Paint Drying Rack for Cabinet Doors

Paint Drying Rack for Cabinet Doors

I had to build a quick Paint Drying Rack for Cabinet Doors last week so I could spray 39 cabinet doors for the Jack and Jill Bathroom!  Because I know you’re going to ask: I did not build these doors.  They are from CabinetNow.com and I’ll give you more details on the doors later.  This post […]

How to Remove Rust from Tools – Cleaning Power Tools

Today I’m showing you how to remove rust from tools.  One way to do it anyway.  The other day I took some time to clean my table saw.  I asked my Instagram community about their cleaning rituals– and there were a lot of products I’d never heard of.  Check out that post if you want […]

Fall Home Tour: Mom Cave

Fall home tour featuring card catalog and mom cave.

I’m thrilled to be joining Marty from A Stroll Thru Life for her annual fall home tour blog hop that she is so kind to organize, and there are so many amazing bloggers participating. If you’re hopping over from The Chronicles of Home, welcome! I’m Erin, and I love to share all things DIY/making and home decor. While I’m not in full-on “fall mode” just yet since it’s still been 80 degrees here in Atlanta, I have started adding some fall touches around the house and will do more in the coming weeks. For today, I thought I would focus on my “mom cave,” aka living room/office, but I’ll also share a couple of peeks at our dining room. (P.S. Be sure to check out the full home tour lineup at the bottom of this post.)

I just finished building a new coffee table, and I’ll share all the details on that very soon. I’ll also add sources below. (The end table and lamp were thrifted.)

DIY Large-Scale Abstract Art / Sofa / Rug / Pillows

The vintage card catalog is one of my favorite pieces in our home. My grandparents “rescued” it from a vacant school building owned by a family friend, and we moved it piece by piece from Indiana to Atlanta, then I restored it. (You can read the whole story here.)

I picked up some cute plastic pumpkins at Target and stuck them in a thrifted dough bowl on top of the coffee table. I typically prefer more modern decor than rustic, but for fall I like to mix the two.

I love succulents for any season.

And here’s a little peek at our dining room. You can check out all the details on the DIY dining table I built here.

I picked up some water hyacinth place mats and pretty plates from IKEA, then used my plastic pumpkins and a little chalkboard place card as decor for this fun fall tablescape. Funny enough, the “napkins” are actually remnants of fabric since I didn’t have any plain white cloth napkins handy.

Loving this fall tablescape!
