How To Cut Your Own Christmas Tree

cutting-your-christmas-tree-sawzall

We always enjoy the experience of cutting down our own Christmas tree and taking the drive out to Fillmore, CA to check out the tree farms has become a yearly tradition for our family. Most of these tree farms have Monterey Pines and Leland Cypress but if that’s not your thing they also import Noble firs from Oregon and Washington.

christmas-tree-farm.jpg

Most Christmas tree farms will provide all the tools you need to cut the tree which means a selection of dull hacksaws, but with some foresight we brought along our own cordless recip saw (a Sawzall) and gloves.

The recip saw makes quick work of cutting the tree especially being bent over and at an awkward angle next to the ground. You can spend quite long time cutting away with a regular saw. Make sure you select a long enough blade that is made for wood. Gloves and long sleeves will also help reduce blisters and the risk of stabbing yourself on bark and pine needles.

I recommend cutting at a downward angle instead of straight across to release pressure off the the saw blade and allow it to cut through easier.

You should also have a friend holding the tree as you cut so it doesn’t fall on you.

And finally make sure you give the tree one last straight cut across when you get home as it will make it work in the stand better.

If you are transporting the tree on top of your car or in your car then opt for the net but if you are dropping it in the bed of your truck you won’t need one.

Do you cut your own tree? What type of Christmas trees do you have in your area?

How to Choose a Christmas Tree Farm

christmas-tree-farm.jpg
Christmas Tree farms are popping up all over the country as the demand for live but sustainable trees is met. Nothing smells better than a live tree and if it’s harvested from a sustainable Christmas Tree farm and then recycled then there is no impact to the environment.

If you have a choice of Christmas Tree farms in your area you need to consider these points before taking the drive to select your Christmas Tree.

1. Is the Christmas Tree farm family-owned? What do they do the rest of the year?
A good Christmas Tree farm will rely on other business throughout the year and cultivate Christmas Trees like crops and plant and cut them accordingly. They aren’t in the business to make a quick buck and treat the land with respect.

2. Stay away from pre-cut trees on Christmas Tree lots
If you drive up to a Christmas Tree farm and see a bunch of pre-cut trees just like you’d see at your local corner lot then turn around. These may have been shipped in from a different location and may have been sitting for quite some time. Just because they are in a more “romantic” forest setting doesn’t mean they are legit. Pre-cut seems easiest but if you are shopping for the most fresh tree then it must get in the water within two hours of being cut or the trunk will start to heal and won’t take water as well.

3. Talk to the help
Are the Christmas Tree salespeople just that, salespeople? Or do they work the Christmas Tree farm and know exactly the type of tree you are looking for and how long it’s been growing? Salespeople are in it for the quick buck and the sign of a corporate Christmas Tree farm.

4. Reputation
Run a quick Google search on the Christmas Tree farm of your choice. Don’t just consider the user-review websites but seek out magazine or more likely local newspaper articles about the farm you are looking at. Family run businesses have relied on local press for years and typically strive to maintain their good standing in the community.

5. Have Fun
Don’t feel rushed to pick your tree. Take your time and walk the lot. Best to go during the weekday and make sure you bring the proper clothing (gloves) for handling the tree. Most Christmas Tree farms will provide you with the tools or cut the tree you’ve selected for you and wrap it properly.

Doing the “Double” in a Chevy Colorado

Chevy Colorado Shoreline

The Chevy Colorado took the mid-size truck category by storm last year and won the Motor Trend Truck of the Year award in 2015. They followed up that win with the same award for 2016 due to a new 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine that gets 31 mpg on the freeway. A statistic that is unmatched by any truck in any class. We joined Chevy for a day of adventure as they introduced a special edition Colorado Shoreline package, and set us up for a day surfing and snowboarding with pro surfer and Fiji maestro Damien Hobgood and leading motocross gear company Fox Head Inc.

chevy-colorado-z71

Colorado Shoreline Edition

chevy-colorado-shoreline

We started the day loading up our 2016 Chevy Colorado with surfboards, skis, snowboards, and gear and headed to Huntington Beach. It was a sloppy day out with multiple crossed up swells and a strong current, but Damien still shredded and we checked out the 2017 Colorado Shoreline. The new Shoreline is designed to appeal to a younger aftermarket crowd that loves customizing their truck with bright paint, blacked-out wheels, and a minimal amount of chrome. It’s definitely a head turner and a truck my 25-year old brother would love, but we prefer the extra cab, Z71 4×4 with the Duramax turbo-diesel.

Chevy GearOn System

chevy-colorado-surfboard

Our Chevy Colorado was equipped with the Chevy GearOn system that included Thule racks and accessories that come straight from the factory. With the Chevy Colorado you don’t need to buy aftermarket racks and accessories, just order it when you buy your Colorado and you’ll be ready to hit the surf or snow straight from the dealer lot.

chevy-colorado-mountain-bike

2016-Chevrolet-ColoradoZ71-038

Our 9’2″ longboard fit in the bed of the truck and our snowboards were held secure by a locking Thule ski rack. There was still plenty of room for our gear bags and anything else we needed to toss in the bed or the cab of the truck.

The Drive

2016-Chevrolet-Colorado-Duramax-TurboDiesel-058

My daily driver is a full-size rig and although I’ve become accustomed to parallel parking in tight spaces and spending a lot on gas, I still love it. The Chevy Colorado definitely tested my allegiance to the full-size truck category, as I really enjoyed driving it on the freeways, up the mountain passes, and navigating parking lots. I never had a chance to even fill it up as we still had plenty in reserve after we returned from our trip. The available V6 might be more peppy but the turbo-diesel had plenty of power for what we needed. With the diesel we’d never worry about towing anything but the largest trailers and the exhaust brake feature is worth it’s weight in gold when towing and descending over passes or down from a day in the mountains.

The tech these trucks sports is also impressive as the onboard navigation was spot-on and the OnStar system was ready to go. The WiFi became useful as we were in the mountains with out cell service but the WiFi in the truck still worked so we could still check our email and login via our smartphones or laptops.

Thanks to the great folks at Chevy, Fox Head Inc., and Damien for sharing their stoke on this truck. Chevy is truly innovating in a truck category that has long been dominated by Toyota and Nissan. It would make sense for them to continue to concede to them leaders but Chevy is aggressively building the Colorado to surpass their peers and bring a truck to market that fits the active lifestyle of many SoCal residents and action sports enthusiasts across the country.

Delta Leak Detector Review

Get notifications sent to your smartphone or tablet as soon as one of your home's water sources starts leaking. The Delta Leak Detector will notify you immediately.

Disclosure: This post was brought to you by the Delta Faucet Company. I received free product and compensation to write this post, but all opinions expressed are my own.

Get notifications sent to your smartphone or tablet as soon as one of your home's water sources starts leaking. The Delta Leak Detector will notify you immediately.

Throughout the past few years since we moved into our current home, we’ve had multiple issues with floods in the basement. After not one, but two rounds of professional waterproofing, we thought we had finally dealt with the issues and gotten them resolved. But no! Soon after the waterproofing process wrapped up, we were hit with another flood when one of our water heaters leaked all over the floor. It was a nightmare. Needless to say, when I found out about the Delta® Leak Detector, I immediately thought back to the day we discovered that our “waterproofed” basement had flooded thanks to the water heater, and how nice it would have been to know immediately when the leak started so that we could have prevented further damage. We’re not sure how long the flood had been there since we don’t go down in our basement very often. It could have been several days. I knew that a leak detector would come in handy for this particular issue, but it would also be helpful to have something like this under the sinks to detect smaller leaks or drips.

Get notifications sent to your smartphone or tablet as soon as one of your home's water sources starts leaking. The Delta Leak Detector will notify you immediately.

So, what exactly is the Delta Leak Detector? It’s a water leak detector that can detect a range of water levels, and alerts you when leaks are present by sending a notification to your smartphone or tablet. It will also send out an audible alert and the LED lights will flash to alert those in the home. Not only does this provide peace of mind when you’re away from home since you will be alerted if there are any issues, but it also enables you to immediately attend to the leak if you are home.

Here’s how it works:

First, you remove the little flap on the back and insert 3 AAA batteries.

Then, you download the Delta Leak Detector app. Here are a couple of screenshots:

Next, you follow the in-app instructions for pairing and setup. It will instruct you to set up your account and then press the button on top of the detector to sync it to your device. Then, it will begin to send you notifications if and when there happens to be a leak.

Then, you place the device under or near your home’s water sources. I tested it out by placing it next to the bathtub and then using a dropper to spill water underneath it. The LED light immediately began flashing and the device started beeping, and I received a notification on my phone. Here’s a little video of what happens when there’s a leak.

My main concern is our water heaters in the basement (although we did replace them both after the last leak), since we don’t spend time down there and if there was a leak we might not know it for several days. I plan on leaving the leak detector down there. I did a test there also.

Get notifications sent to your smartphone or tablet as soon as one of your home's water sources starts leaking. The Delta Leak Detector will notify you immediately.

This will certainly provide us with peace of mind knowing that even if we don’t go down in the basement often, we will know right away if a leak happens.

The device was incredibly easy to set up and took just a couple of minutes. It wasn’t complicated at all, which I was definitely pleased with. It’s user-friendly, compact in size, well-designed, and syncs and is ready to use very quickly.

Want to get one of these devices for free? Delta is currently holding a sweepstakes in which they will be awarding free devices to those who share their own photos and/or videos on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #LeakDetectSweepstakes and tag @DeltaFaucet. Each week throughout November, four winners will be rewarded with a Delta Leak Detector and be featured on Delta’s Inspired Living blog.

Why a Pressure Washer Is a Must-Have Cleaning Tool

Pressure washers are one of those household items that once you get one, you can’t believe how you ever managed without one. They truly come in handy for tasks throughout your home. They take up little space, are affordable, and when properly cared for will last for years.

We recently acquired a Briggs & Stratton 3100 MAX gas-powered pressure washer. The timing is perfect as we are in process of moving. Here’s how we used the Briggs & Stratton pressure washer this month and why it’s proven to be a vital tool in our DIY arsenal.

Cleaning the Exterior

Unfortunately our previous home was located near a freeway and a fine layer of dirt always covered everything in our backyard. We’ve used a hose and sprayer to clean our walls, patio, and outdoor furniture, but it has never really gotten everything clean. Once we used our pressure washer on the walls and realized how much dirt was removed and how clean our walls had become, we were instantly sold on needing to use a pressure washer for this type of job.

Our new home is not near a freeway, but the home has been neglected and the exterior has probably never been washed . Once we took the pressure washer to the white exterior walls, we saw years of gunk get removed and our walls actually looked white!

Cleaning Outdoor Furniture

We continued to use the pressure washer to clean the patio area and wash down all of our outdoor furniture. The Briggs & Stratton pressure washer is a much more effective cleaner than a regular hose sprayer, which never really get the job done right and wastes more water. At 2.5 gallons per minute, we know our Briggs and Stratton pressure washer is making the most effective use of water.

This unit comes with four different spray nozzle options, which provide a variety of water streams. We chose the yellow nozzle as it provided just enough power to really wash down our furniture, without damaging the fabrics. It also worked great on our patio umbrella and outdoor rug, and after cleaning unveiled their true color again.

One concern with a gas-powered pressure washer was the sound of the engine, but Briggs & Stratton addressed this by introducing Quiet Sense technology that makes the pressure washer idle 40% quieter when the spray gun trigger is released. This dramatically cuts down on the sound, which makes the unit even more enjoyable to use.

Cleaning the Garage Floor

One of the first projects at our new house was adding an epoxy floor to our garage. The original garage floor was in decent shape, but was unprotected, so years of oil and dirt had built up and caused a mess. Everyone knows the first step before applying epoxy is to thoroughly clean the garage floor. A degreaser and brush is a good start, but to really remove the grime a pressure washer is needed.

We fired up the Briggs & Stratton and it easily removed years of dirt buildup. Hours with a brush and hose would still not have been effective as the pressure washer was for doing this job.

A clean garage floor provides the necessary base for the epoxy to adhere to, and we can now be confident our garage floor will stay protected for years to come.

Truck Washer

I’ve got a Ford F150 and 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser that send plenty of time in the mud, dirt, and clay around Los Angeles and in Nevada. The key to keeping your truck clean is not letting that stuff cake on and dry—especially the clay. Giving my trucks a quick spray down with the pressure washer is the best way to remove all the dirt before a proper wash and wax.

There is nothing more effective than a pressure washer for cleaning the undercarriage and frame of the trucks. You can really get into all of the nooks and crannies in the wheel wells and other areas that a hose sprayer just doesn’t have the reach or power to clean.

The Briggs & Stratton makes it easy to wash vehicles or anything that can benefit from soap or detergent, as the 3100 has a convenient detergent tank that you just fill and it gets dispensed automatically through the washer.

Future Uses

Because we plan on spending so much time outside, our Briggs & Stratton pressure washer will get a ton of use. We’ve got an old shed on the back of the property that needs cleaning both inside and out, and a few Rubbermaid storage closets that have acquired a ton of dirt and cobwebs over the years. A few minutes with the pressure washer will clean up both nicely.

We have a ton of patio space around our pool and patio area, and keeping it clean will remain a top priority throughout the year. We’ve got lovely trees and brushes around our property, but they shed a variety of leaves, flowers, and fruits that mix to form a tough to remove film around the pool area. It’s much easier to “sweep” them away with a pressure washer than a broom.

If you’re on the fence about getting a pressure washer, don’t be! Buy one today and start enjoying a cleaner outdoor life now. We recommend the Briggs & Stratton 3100 MAX which is available on Amazon for $429.
