Made in USA: Milwaukee Tool Factory Tour

We’ve traveled to the Milwaukee Tool’s New Tool Symposium many times, but this was our first opportunity to tour their factory in Greenwood, Mississippi. Milwaukee Tool has been producing tools and accessories in the U.S. for more than 90 years, and although they are foreign-owned, they are steadfastly operated by a team in Milwaukee that is committed to U.S. manufacturing.

Greenwood, MS is about 2 hours south of Memphis in an area known as the Mississippi Delta. In the words of the plant manager, Jack Bilotta, the area is impoverished which makes Milwaukee Tools commitment to the community that much more meaningful. The plant first opened in 2001 with 120,000 square feet and 87 employees and is now bursting at the seams with 390,000 square feet and 670 employees. Milwaukee Tool shows no signs of slowing down their domestic production as they have invested $47 million in operations with the past five years alone.

This event meant so much to the city of Greenwood that state and local politicians, including Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, attended and shared with us the importance of having Milwaukee Tool there.

We had an opportunity to interview Milwaukee Tool President, Steve Richman, about their Made in the USA production and here’s what he had to say.

Why has Milwaukee taken the initiative to produce/assemble more tools domestically?

Milwaukee Tool has manufactured products in the USA since 1924. Although there has been more attention given to the topic of domestic manufacturing, Milwaukee Tool has manufactured products domestically for over 90 years. This is not a new initiative. Our manufacturing facilities in Greenwood, MS, Jackson, MS, and Mukwonago, WI are critical components of our global manufacturing footprint for our Power Tools, Power Tool Accessories and Hand Tool businesses. We have invested tens of millions of dollars in our domestic operations and that investment will continue.

Is Asia the only viable option for sourcing electronic components?

Milwaukee Tool is a leader in delivering disruptive innovation to the trades. In addition to spending hundreds of hours in the field with tradespeople, we spend countless hours researching and developing new technology. There is no question the advancement of power tools has increased significantly over the past several years with the introduction of new technology such as Lithium Ion, Brushless Motors and Advanced Electronics. In order to be a leader in new technology, it is important to have a global perspective in working with technology partners. Milwaukee Tool leverages electronic component suppliers from regions throughout the world including the US, Europe and Asia.

For tools produced overseas, how do you maintain quality control?

Regardless of where we manufacture our products across the globe, our approach to quality is consistent and unwavering. It begins with the hundreds of engineers in our US design center working hand-in-hand with our reliability and quality engineers to design products which exceed the demands of the tradespeople in the field. We have established quality controls and procedures across the globe for all manufacturing facilities and supplier partners. Throughout the entire tool development and manufacturing process, quality measures are enforced to maintain this consistency.

Are tools assembled in the USA of higher quality or are they just perceived that way?

It is our priority to ensure quality and consistency regardless of the manufacturing location. Milwaukee products have been designed and engineered in Wisconsin since 1924. We currently have a team of over 400 Engineers exclusively committed to improving productivity on the job-site with innovative technologies that help all trades work cleaner, safer, and become more productive. We are stewards of an incredible brand which has been built on a reputation of quality for over 90 years. The relationship we have built with our customers and end users is far too valuable to gamble with cutting corners and ignoring what got us her to begin with. Delivering a high quality product is critical in everything we do.

We’ve visited a lot of plants and the Greenwood facility ranks near the top. It was extremely clean and the employees seemed diligently focused at the task on hand. They run multiple shifts around the clock and produce tens of millions of Sawzall and Hole Dozer blades. In fact enough blades cover the diameter of the earth over the course of a year.

Enjoy these photos from inside the Milwaukee Tool plant.

Flatback Measuring Tape – workshop fav

Flatback measuring tape

I previously shared a post about my favorite tape measure, the lefty-righty.  I’ve recently discovered a new favorite, the Flatback measuring tape.  I consider this another “must have” woodworking and cabinet making tool. I still love my lefty-righty and use it a TON but I use it more for remodeling and measuring long boards and moulding.  Things the flatback can’t […]

The Grypmat Is a Mechanics Best Friend

Wrenching on your car is a favorite American pastime, but finding a place to hold your tools without them falling into the abyss of your engine well is a serious problem. We’ve had more screwdrivers and wrenches roll into our fan shroud then we can count. The Grypmat from Gryphon is designed to hold all of your tools in place, for easy access.

A rolling tool cart is the typical solution for using a lot of tools next to your vehicle or any other project you are working on, but it’s still not as convenient as keeping a set of wrenches right next to you. The Grypmat features a high-performance, flexible, non-magnetic, non-slip, chemical resistant, anti-static, rubber tool mat. Check it out!

Bathroom Renovation Update – part 7

Bathroom reno update - week 8

Hi guys!  Life has a bit crazy since my last post, 6 weeks ago.  I’ve been working on my bathroom renovation but I’ve not been functioning at 100%.  Long story short… First, I had some excruciating pain in my abdomen that resulted in a trip to the ER. (I’ve been having similar pain for the last several […]

Luxury Linens & a “Mom Cave” Update

These Sumatra Indigo decorative pillows from Christy Linens are gorgeous! Loving the modern dip dyed effect.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Christy Linens. All opinions are my own.

One of my favorite parts of the decorating process is selecting linens for a space. I might be a bit of a throw pillow hoarder, I’ll admit it. So when I was recently introduced to Christy Linens, a luxury towel and bed linen brand, I was excited to check out some of their products. I opted for a pair of their Sumatra Indigo decorative pillows, and a set of their Christy Renaissance white towels.

Loving this Sumatra Indigo decorative pillow from Christy Linens! The dip dyed look is modern and beautiful.

Loving this mom cave living room! Especially the rug and that Sumatra Indigo pillow!

The throw pillows are 18×20 lumbar style, and I love them! The dip dyed effect is really modern and beautiful, and I’m loving them on the chairs in my “mom cave” living room. I opted to use them in there rather than the bedroom, although they might be moved back and forth.

As for the towels, they’re made of the highest quality Egyptian cotton sourced from specific areas of the Nile Delta, and known for their performance, great absorbency, durability, and softness. I’m always on the lookout for good quality towels, especially for guests to use (the kids aren’t too picky about which towels they use). These are so soft and you can tell they are great quality.

Christy Renaissance towels from Christy Linens are so soft, durable, absorbent, and perfect for guests!

Christy Renaissance towels from Christy Linens are so soft, durable, absorbent, and perfect for guests!

As for Christy Linens, it’s a British company founded by Henry Christy, who was responsible for bringing the towel back to the West from Turkey in 1850. Clearly the company has a rich history in the UK, and they even design and produce the official towels for the Wimbledon Championships! Pretty cool. You can even purchase items from their Wimbledon collection on their website.

For more information, be sure to check out Christy Linens online, or connect with them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

I would love to know, which Christy Linens product would you love to try?

Chevrolet Bolt EV Review

Chevrolet Bolt EV Review

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is the first mass-produced electric vehicle that has a range of over 200 miles and costs close to $30K. After spending a weekend driving it around San Francisco and through Napa Valley, we’re convinced that Chevy has a winner. This electric car is truly comparable to any similarly priced and sized vehicles, and performance wise it probably bests them.

If you’ve never driven an electric car you are in for a real treat. Acceleration is instantaneous, and after driving the Bolt EV, you will crave that same experience in your own vehicle. The single-pedal driving is an awesome experience that takes some getting used to, but once you realize that your “gas” and brake pedals have been combined, you’ll never want to go back to two-pedal driving again. You’ll also save the wear on your brakes and extend your battery charge—a win, win.

Chevrolet Bolt EV Review

The Bolt EV is available with three charging modes, so you’ll never be stranded. A worthy upgrade is the fast DC charging which requires an upgraded charging port, but this mode will make road trips much more enjoyable. Stop lunch on the road and you’ll return to a fully-charged or topped off vehicle.

In addition to the sporty feel of the Bolt EV, we were also very comfortable riding in it. For a small car we never felt cramped and had plenty of room for luggage. The Bolt EV would make an excellent second vehicle and most likely would supplant your current car as a daily driver. The only drawback is the cargo space fills up quickly, so it’s not ideal for larger families.

Chevrolet Bolt EV Review

A couple years ago we spent some time with the Chevy Volt, which is electric powered, but also has a gas engine as backup. It’s slightly more flexible than the Bolt EV, but not by much. Once you get the hang of maximizing the 238 mile range of the Bolt EV, you’ll forget needing gas.

The all-electric car class is growing quickly, and Chevy has upped the ante with the Bolt EV. The Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, and Fiat 500e are all similarly priced, but the Bolt EV delivers a much higher range and more interior space. The Tesla 3 is scheduled to deliver late this year, but the Bolt EV has a head start and there is no reason it can’t replace the Toyota Prius as the vehicle of choice among eco-conscious millennials and anyone who values performance and efficiency.
