As part of the Plaid Creators team, I often have the privilege of trying out fun new products before they hit the market, and then I get to share all the details with you so you’ll be familiar with them as soon as they hit store shelves. This time, I had the opportunity to play around with FolkArt® Brushed Metal™, a beautiful line of matte, brushed metallic finish acrylic paints. I recently used it to customize some unfinished wood picture frames, and I thought I would share this simple home decor craft with you since it’s something anyone can do, and there are SO many ways you can customize this project to suit your style.
Project Supplies:
- FolkArt® Brushed Metal™
- Artist’s Paintbrushes
- Plaid® Wood Surfaces Picture Frames
- Painter’s Tape
- Paper Plate (to use as a palette)
- Cardstock, craft paper, or drop cloth to protect your work surface
Step 1
Paint your base coat. I used FolkArt Brushed Metal in “Brushed Pale Silver” for the base coat on both frames. You may need to apply two coats depending on coverage. I opted to use two different frame sizes and shapes, and you can pick these up at most craft stores.
The Brushed Metal is great because it’s water-based (which makes for easy clean-up) and non-toxic, it’s easy to brush on, plus it comes in 10 on-trend colors. You can use it for indoor or outdoor projects, and it comes in 2 oz. and 4 oz. sizes. Plus, it’s made in the USA!
Step 2
After your first coat has fully dried, create your designs. I decided on two different styles of paint treatments, and this is where you can really get creative with putting your own design spin on it. Tape off a unique design, freehand it, or even use a stencil! I opted to tape my designs. For the round frame, I taped a diagonal line across the bottom, and for the smaller frame, I taped stripes.
Step 3
Paint your second color. I used FolkArt Brushed Metal in “Brushed Gold.”
Step 4
After your paint has dried, peel your tape off.
Insert a photo or print and you’re done!
FolkArt also has another awesome product coming out called FolkArt Color Shift™, and you can find more info about that here.
