Looking for a quick and easy weekend craft project? I’ve got you covered! Today I’ll show you how to make a DIY chalkboard family sign using just a handful of supplies. This would be so much to make during a craft night or party with friends!
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Plaid®. All opinions are my own.
Project Supplies:
- FolkArt® Lily & Val Stencils
- FolkArt® Erasable Chalk
- FolkArt® Chalkboard Multi-Surface Paint
- Wooden Board (I used a 1×6 cut to 14″ long)
- Small Paintbrush
- Embellishments (I used glitter card stock feathers)
- Double-sided tape or hot glue gun
The Lily & Val stencils include inspirational hand lettering and illustrations created by chalkboard artist Valerie McKeehan. There are 4 styles and they are made out of laser cut mylar. These stencils can be found at Michaels. As for the FolkArt Erasable Chalk, it is durable, smudge-proof, and long-lasting. You can wash it away completely with a damp sponge, so no worries if you mess up! It’s made in the USA and is water-based and nontoxic, so I feel totally comfortable using it around my children.
How to Make a DIY Chalkboard Family Sign
Step 1
First, cut your board to the desired dimension (or buy one pre-cut), and sand any rough edges. I used a piece of scrap wood that I already had on hand, which made this project super affordable.
Step 2
Next, paint the board with FolkArt Chalkboard Multi-Surface Paint. I applied two coats, letting it dry for an hour in between each one.
Step 3
“Season” your board by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk across the entire surface.
Step 4
Use the Lily & Val Stencils to spell out your last name (I did “Spain Family” for our sign). These stencils have two layers which allow you to get a handcrafted chalk art look. Apply the first layer, and use a pencil to mark the little dots above and below the letter so you will know where to line up your second layer. Then, using the foam spouncer attached to the FolkArt Erasable chalk, gently rub in circular motions to apply a light coat. I found this method to produce better results than “pouncing” the applicator up and down. I also found that it helped to blot the spouncer with a paper towel first. You don’t want it to be too over-saturated or the paint will bleed.
Step 5
Next, line the registration mark dots up with the pencil marks you made with the first layer. Use the same method to apply the Erasable Chalk. Lightly rub it on in a circular motion.
Step 6
After your Erasable Chalk has dried, you can attach your embellishments. I used glitter card stock feathers and attached them with double-sided tape, but you can use anything you choose!
That’s it. Super simple, and easy to customize to your taste too.
