Our kitchen has been in desperate need of some TLC since we moved into our home a few years ago. It was one of those projects that just kept getting bumped down the list when other higher-priority projects needed attention first. We would actually love to gut the space and start from scratch, but that just isn’t in the budget right now. We definitely needed to address the cabinets at the very least. They’re original to the house (early 1980s) and had been painted right before we moved in, but they weren’t painted properly and have been chipping and peeling ever since. Not only that, but the hardware was boring and I really didn’t love it.
Here’s a “before” photo of the space.
But wait … let’s zoom in and see what we were REALLY working with in there. Warning: It’s scary.
Gross, right? I sanded, primed, and painted the cabinets with a fresh coat of white paint. Then, I added beautiful new Liberty Hardware pulls. Hardware really is like the “jewelry” of the kitchen, so it definitely helped elevate the space a bit for now. I chose the Liberty Classic Square in Champagne Bronze from The Home Depot, and the color is beautiful.
The hardware was a quick and easy update. They fit the existing holes perfectly, so I just needed a screwdriver to remove the old ones and swap them out.
We also have a little desk area in the eat-in portion of the kitchen that desperately needed some attention. It had these awkward, ugly shutter doors and the paint on the drawers was chipping badly. One of the handles had lost a screw and was just hanging on for dear life. Look at how sad it was.
I decided to remove the doors and add wallpaper to the back of the shelves (left over from the family room built-in shelves), and of course I added matching Liberty Hardware pulls. I brought in the acrylic chair from my “mom cave” office/living room and I absolutely love it in here. These little changes made the whole space feel more modern.
It’s amazing what a coat of paint and some new hardware can do for a space. Not having a big budget for a kitchen makeover shouldn’t stop you from making little changes, because those little changes have the power to make a BIG impact. I’m so happy with how this little makeover turned out, and I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner!
