Master Bedroom: All About the Bed and Headboard

Master Bedroom Headboard

If you’ve been following along, then you know that I’m participating in the One Room Challenge, which means I’m making over our master bedroom within a 6 week period of time, with the final reveal coming at the end of the 6 weeks. (You can catch up on all of the details, including my plans for the room, here.) Today, I’m sharing all the details about the bed and headboard.

You’ve seen the before pics of our room, but here it is again just as a reminder, and so you can see how disproportionate our bed looked in our rather large room. Here’s half of this part of the room.

Master Bedroom Before

We had a queen sized bed, but our room is the largest in the house (although it’s hard to tell from the photo above), so when we moved in and plopped our bed in the middle of the room, we quickly realized that it looked ridiculous. A large room sounds nice in theory, and I’m certainly not complaining about the space, but the thing I’ve struggled with has been making it feel cozy without just cluttering it with random furniture to fill it up. Also, a new bed wasn’t in the budget, as we had a slew of other issues to address (the not so fun things that come with homeownership of an older home, like waterproofing our basement, replacing our air conditioner, getting a bunch of duct work done, replacing both water heaters, and so on).

Then, as luck would have it, I won a new Yogabed mattress at the Haven Conference last year. (I definitely did a happy dance.) I chose a King sized mattress, and they shipped it to my house in a box, and when you open it, it expands to full size within about 5 minutes. Here’s a photo I posted on Instagram the day we opened the mattress and Chris tested it out for the first time.

Yogabed Mattress in the Master Bedroom

After sleeping on it for several months, I can confidently say that we are super happy with it. It’s the most comfortable mattress we’ve ever owned. It was really fun to watch it expand, and pretty fascinating to know that it was able to squish into a pretty smallish sized box. When we got the new mattress, we moved our old bed into the guest room, and the guest bed into the playroom (creating a second guest sleeping area). Since we upgraded mattress sizes, we needed a new headboard too. (Oh, and we ordered this basic bed frame and this box springs set off of Amazon since at the time we didn’t know yet what bed/headboard we would be getting. We went without a headboard for quite some time.)

Finally, I found the headboard I wanted on the Wayfair website, but unfortunately it was sold out in the size I needed, so I had to wait several weeks for it to come back in stock. Then I snatched it up and rest is history. Here it is with our new Crane & Canopy bedding, which I shared with you recently and I am now backtracking to share the deets on the new headboard/bed.

Check out this gorgeous headboard! The perfect addition to the master bedroom.

I love the dark charcoal color and how it brings a bit of masculinity to balance out the feminine touches in the room, and especially to contrast our closet that I recently made over. (You can see that here.) My “must have” list when looking for a headboard were as follows: tufting; nailhead trim; linen fabric; and some shade of gray. This headboard met all of those requirements, and was far less expensive than most I had seen.

I opted not to DIY the headboard for a few reasons. Number one: I don’t have enough patience for button tufting or perfect nailhead trim alignment. Number two: The materials can be costly, particularly the foam, and when I calculated the cost plus time I would spend, it just made more sense to buy since the price was right. I know plenty of bloggers who have made gorgeous upholstered headboards, but in this case, I knew exactly what I wanted and I happened to find it.

I’ll be sharing my room progress over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
