You guys, I have been talking about making over our master bedroom for like ever. You probably started to think I was a big fat liar and that I would never get around to doing a thing to it. And to be honest, there were times when I thought that myself. The truth is, our master bedroom is an overwhelming space to make over. It’s the largest room in our house, and the thought of even painting the walls has seemed daunting to me, which is why it’s taken me two whole years to get around to it. (First world problems, I know.) When I found out about the One Room Challenge™ hosted by Calling it Home, I thought this was the perfect kick in the pants I needed to get this room done.
If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge, it’s hosted by Linda at Calling it Home and 20 designers are invited to make over one room in their house from top to bottom in 6 weeks. Any blogger can also participate and link up just for fun (which is what I’m doing this time around). We will all share our progress each Wednesday for the entire 6 weeks, with the final reveal happening on the last day.
So, without further adieu, here’s where we started with our master bedroom when we moved in.
And here is how things sat for the better part of 2 years.
Now, I’m going to be really real with you. Like, really, really real. This is what our room looked like when this makeover started before I recently painted the walls. (*Shielding my eyes and hoping you won’t judge me.*)
I snapped that shot super quickly right before I painted, and no I didn’t even make the bed! This is the most accurate “before” photo you’ll ever see.
I shared this moodboard a long time ago for the general feel I was going for in this room, and I’ve tweaked it a bit since then. Here’s the current, updated moodboard.
We will be keeping our white furniture (dresser and armoire) as well as the black writing desk that currently serves as one of our night stands.
I did just finally paint the room right before I found out about this challenge, so the walls will stay as they are (details on that coming shortly), and we did add a new bed (more details on that coming soon too). You got a peek at our new bedding recently here, but here’s a small shot for those of you who are new.
And here’s my goal list of what I’d like to accomplish in the next 6 weeks:
- Paint (done, and I’ll share details soon!)
- Hem curtains and add trim
- Add new hardware to existing furniture
- Swap out mirror with the one in Jonah’s nursery
- Swap out glider with something else
- Build a nightstand for one side of the bed (the existing desk will stay on one side of the bed)
- Add artwork to the walls
- Accessorize
- Figure out lighting
I won a new mattress at the Haven Conference last year so we upgraded to a king size bed, so we needed a new headboard and new bedding. I’ll be sharing all the details on our new headboard very soon.
Looking forward to seeing how this room shapes up, and finally crossing it off my list! I would also love to challenge YOU to decorate one room in 6 weeks, and share your progress with me! If you have a blog you can link up over at Calling it Home, and if you don’t then I invite you to please share progress pictures on my Facebook page!
