Peeling Paint, Discover Some Great Ways to Fix It.

Peeling Paint, Some Ways to Fix It.

Peeling paint is not only an eyesore, it can be a health issue if small children and pets are in the area of the peeling.

As a homeowner, you should always be on the lookout for paint that is starting to bubble. Paint that is starting to bubble may be a sign of paint that will start to peel.

What are some of the main reasons paint peels?

●  Plastered walls that never fully dried.

●  An excessively damp house.

●  Low-grade paint.

●  Heavy dust on walls before painting.

●  Wrong additives added to paint.

●  Cooking grease or oil left on walls before painting.

●  High gloss paint not de-glossed before painting.

It isn’t uncommon for paint that has lost its adhesion to come off in sheets like loose wallpaper. There are several remedies to rectify paint that has become unstable. One is to scrape and complete the peeling of the paint that is loose. Another is to pop the bubbles and score areas of peeling paint to be able to accept new paint that will help bind the old paint back to the surface it was applied to.

Low nap paint roller covers are notorious for creating micro vacuums when loaded with paint then grabbing pulling existing paint off the surface like a lint brush

Another reason that paint will start to peel is the wrong application of oil based paint onto latex or water based paints or polyurethanes. Though the quality of latex and oil based paints have greatly improved to avoid such situations, it’s still common for the paints to not co-operate in the passage of moisture and peeling paint is the result.

Some paints are less likely to fail.

Latex paints are somewhat permeable and allow moisture to pass through its flexible coating. Oil based paints are solid, inflexible and resist the passage of water or moisture through its surface.

Paint that is sprayed is more capable to peel based on the process itself creating a sheet-like finish. When the surface is badly prepared, sprayed paint and lacquer can come off like a sheet of paper. Sprayed paint doesn’t have to be avoided. Extra attention should be given to the surface the paint is going to be put on.

Recap: to fix the immediate peeling of paint, decide to peel or lock down the problem areas. Make sure there is no grease on the surface. Use a TSP solution to wash and de-gloss paint surfaces to receive paint. If available use a moisture meter to determine if excessive moisture is trapped in the surface to be painted.

Make sure you apply latex onto oil base paint. Oil onto oil based paint or Latex paint onto latex paint.

Prepare before repainting.

It’s also always a good idea to scuff trouble areas with a scratch pad to assist in the adhesion of the new paint.

Simple Upgrades: Swapping Out Light Switches & Outlets

Update our outlets and light switches with the radiant® collection from Legrand! They are modern, sleek, and combine technology with style. Love it that there are no visible screws! #ad

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Legrand. All opinions are my own.

One of the many items on our “to do list” we’ve had since moving into our home was to update our almond colored outlets and light switches. This became even more pressing when several of our faceplates started cracking in half, and we also realized that some of our outlets were not installed correctly and whenever we plugged something in, the entire outlet would get pushed into the wall and could be easily wiggled, etc. Definitely not a good situation. Luckily, with the help of Legrand, we recently upgraded 3 of our downstairs rooms with outlets and switches from the radiant® collection. We installed them in our kitchen, dining room, and “mom cave” (aka living room/office).

Here’s a quick look at what our outlet situation looked like “before.”

Our outlet situation BEFORE we upgraded to the radiant collection by Legrand.

And here are the updated spaces.

We opted for all white outlets and switches, and we went with the tamper resistant outlets in most places, with the exception of a couple of the USB charger/tamper resistant outlet combos.

I especially love having the USB charger above our kitchen desk, so we can charge our phones while keeping our laptop and other things plugged in at the same time if we need to.

Designers always say “it’s all in the details,” and it really is true that sometimes the smallest projects can make a larger impact than you would think when it comes to the look and feel of a room. This definitely created a more updated, modern feel in our home. I also love that the outlets and light switches no longer stand out as an eye sore, taking center stage for all the wrong reasons. Now, they blend seamlessly into our decor and allow everything else to stand out.

The radiant® collection offers dimmers, switches and sensors, outlets, USB charging, and home automation. There are a variety of colors to choose from, and I love that they look modern and sleek and don’t have screws showing at all.

The tamper resistant outlets are amazing for homes with small children, like ours. The patented shutter system helps prevent foreign objects from being inserted, and if you’ve ever had a toddler, then you know this is a concern.

Technology comes into play in a big way with this collection, as you can choose preset timers which provides convenience and energy saving capabilities; occupancy/vacancy sensors which turn on when motion is detected and turn off with an adjustable time delay; and universal paddle dimmers.

I would love to know, which items from the collection would you choose for your home? You can see the entire radiant collection here.

And here’s a handy dandy pinnable graphic if you’d like to save this post for later!

My Mom Cave & Bloggers’ Favorite Sofas

The Lakewood Sofa from Home Decorators Collection looks AMAZING in this "mom cave" (aka living room/office)!

I’m teaming up with some blog friends to share some of our very favorite sofas, so if you happen to be in the market for a new one, this post is for you. (Check out the blog hop at the end of this post!) There are so many things to take into consideration when buying a sofa: durability, scale, fabric type, style, color, stain resistance, etc. We chose two completely different types of sofas for our home based on which space they would go in. Our family room sofa is kid friendly. It was a bit of an investment because we knew we needed something that would last. We chose a polyester blend for the fabric since that’s easiest to clean, and we also needed a sofa bed for guests since we purchased it when we lived in a much smaller home. (You can see that sofa here.) But that’s not my favorite sofa in our home.

My favorite sofa in our home is the one in my “mom cave” (aka living room/office). It’s the less kid friendly but much more beautiful Lakewood Tufted Sofa from Home Decorators Collection.

I googly eyes-love it. It may not be practical for a highly trafficked kid space, but for my mom cave/office/living room, it’s perfect. (It does come in other, more kid friendly, fabric options too though.) I just chose a light color linen fabric.

The Mid Century coffee table belonged to my great-grandmother. I just laid a layer of burlap under the glass for the time being. The floor lamp was a Craigslist find that I spray painted gold.

The art on the wall was given to us by Chris’ grandmother when we first got married. I love styling this sofa with pillows that add pops of bright color to the space. I made the floral pillow covers (but you can find some on Etsy, linked below), and the green pillow is from HomeGoods.

How to Refinish Wood Floors

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. All opinions are 100% mine.

Nationwide provided me with information regarding its blog post. The Art and Craft of Refinishing Wood Floors

Wood floors are gorgeous when well-maintained. They can last for years with proper care which includes refinishing them when they have worn out. A nice finish will protect your wood floors from water damage, scuffs, and regular wear and tear.

Every 10 Years

Check for wear and tear on your hardwood floors. Experts suggest that floors should be refinished approximately every 10 years or so. Look at the wear on the surface above the tongue and groove portion of the plank. (You may have to remove a baseboard to see this.)

Start with Sanding

If your flooring is only lightly scratched, you can start with 150 grit sandpaper to provide a good surface for the new finish to adhere to. For flooring with deep scratches you’ll need to sand down to the bare wood and remove any of the existing finish.

To sand the wood floors, you’ll need a drum sander which you can rent at your local hardware store.

undefined

Staining and Sealing

After sanding, remove every bit of dust off the floor by sweeping and vacuuming the floors. The final step is to stain and seal the floor. Water-based polyurethanes are a great choice for a finish.

Give yourself enough time to properly refinish your wood floors. The pros can take up to a week to refinish a small home, which ensures the best quality results. If you do the job yourself, it can take even longer.

Family Room Refresh & New Accent Chairs

Get stylish arm chairs for a great price at Kohl's! The Charlotte Swoop Arm Chair looks great in this family room.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Kohl’s. I was paid for this post and received the included furniture and home decor as compensation.

A while back when I was working on a fun project in my “mom cave” (living room/office), we moved our family room chairs into the space and I really loved the way they looked in there. This left us with a need for replacement chairs in the recently made-over family room, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted. The chairs needed to be small enough to work in the space and also not obscure the entire view of the fireplace, but large enough that an adult could comfortably sit in them when we are in need of extra seating. (We already have a sofa and armchair, so these are more for when we entertain guests.) Luckily, Kohl’s came to the rescue and offered up a pair of their Charlotte Swoop Arm chairs which I chose in light gray.

Looking for affordable arm chairs? These Charlotte Swoop Arm Chairs from Kohl's are inexpensive and look great!

I also chose some other home accents from Kohl’s to complement the space, like an antler bowl, a gold and glass tray, and a two-toned wood and blue vase. Plus, I snatched up some gallery frames to hang on the wall around the TV which I’ll share soon. (Just have to figure out what to display in them!)

Loving these styled shelves! The wallpaper backing and that pop of blue on the vase are perfection.

For now, I think the chairs are neutral enough to work in the space and the scale is perfect. Kohl’s offers a wide variety of furniture, including several other arm chairs to choose from too, and this particular chair comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

Kohl’s has some great sales going on soon, including the following:

  • Home Sale – $10 off $50 home purchase with promo code HOME10 (1/27 – 2/5)
  • Kohl’s Charge holders – 15% off (1/29 – 2/1)
  • General Public offer – 20% off $75 purchase, 15% off all purchases (2/2 – 2/5)

Looking for affordable arm chairs? These Charlotte Swoop Arm Chairs from Kohl's are inexpensive and look great!

Here it is styled up slightly differently.
