Adjustable Pegboard Drawer Organizer

Adjustable dividers for drawer storage.

Adjustable dividers for drawer storage.

I have another workshop drawer organizer project to share but this adjustable pegboard insert could be used anywhere for anything.  Makeup, utensils, spices…you name it!  It’s pretty simple to create and it all came about when I was looking at four 8′ long pieces of pine with 1/4″ grooves that became sCrap wood when they didn’t work for my original purpose (sliding cabinet doors).  I was staring down that 8′ 1/4″ groove when it hit me!  I had some 1/4″ dowels that I’d purchased because they fit into the 1/4″ holes in pegboard and this 1/4″ groove would fit right over the dowels making this scrap wood the perfect adjustable drawer organizer dividers!Adjustable dividers for drawer storage.

How to make an adjustable pegboard drawer organizer

Supplies:

  • Pegboard with 1/4″ holes
  • 1/4″ diameter wood dowels
  • 3/4″ wood for dividers (Any kind of plywood or wood.  Great way to use up scrap wood.)

First, simply cut a piece of pegboard to fit the bottom of the drawer you are wanting to use.  Test the fit but don’t drop it into the drawer yet or you’ll have a difficult time getting it back out.Adjustable Pegboard Drawer Organizer

After making sure it fits correctly, drill a hole on one side.  A Forstner bit is a great choice for this task and you don’t have to drill an full circle, a semicircle will do just fine.  I placed a piece of scrap 1/4″ mdf next to my pegboard to keep the bit level and centered my Forstner bit in between the two boards so only half the circle cut was made on the pegboard.Adjustable Pegboard Drawer Organizer

Next you’ll need to cut a 1/4″ groove in your divider wood.  I used a dado stack on my table saw but you could make several passes with a regular blade to get to 1/4″ width.  Alternately, you could use a router table to cut this groove.  I cut my groove about 1/2 deep.Adjustable dividers for drawer storage. Then cut your dowels into lengths of about 3/4″.   I think the easiest way to cut a bunch of dowels is to bundle then and wrap them in tape.Adjustable Pegboard Drawer Organizer

The dowels need to be long enough to set into the pegboard and stick up into the groove on your dividers but not be too tall that they push the divider up.Adjustable dividers for drawer storage.

Insert your dowel pieces into the pegboard depending on how you want to divide your drawer.  I wanted one long divider to separate my drawer into two halves, one longer half for spade bits and one for Forstner bits. Adjustable Pegboard Drawer Organizer

I placed my bits onto the pegboard to determine how far apart to space the other dividers.

Then I inserted all my dowels.  I had to use a rubber mallet to push them fully.  I need to get my thumbs on a workout schedule.  They constantly let me down.

I don’t have that many spade or Forstner bits so I have some space to grow.  All the spade bits are labeled very clearly so that section is good to go.

The Forstner bits, on the other hand send you on a scavenger hunt with a magnifying glass so I labeled pieces of 1/4″ mdf to insert into the space with each Forstner bit.  I opted not to write in Sharpie directly on the pegboard for two reasons: 1.  my handwriting is messy and 2.  permanent marker would make this organizer less adjustable.  With labels I can just drop into the space with each bit I can move things around as needed.

Two Tier Drawer Storage and Organization for Driver Bits

Two tier drawer storage for driver bits.

Two Tier Drawer Storage and Organization for Driver Bits

I’m sharing more of my workshop organization projects that I did while coats of polyurethane were drying on my Pantry Countertop.  After building my sliding driver bit storage tray, I needed an additional storage solution for my bits that are too long to store in that top tray.  I don’t have that many but everything needs a home to live in so these bits needed their own little storage area.  I decided to build that home right behind the little cubby in at drawer that houses my screw driver. How to make a Sliding bit Storage Tray

I cut a strip of 1/2″ plywood to fit the width of the drawer and then cut a piece of pegboard to cover about 2/3 the width of that plywood.Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

I had to drill the holes in the pegboard larger but I didn’t add additional holes like I did in the sliding bit storage tray.Drawer Organizer for Driver Bits. #storage #organization #workshop

And, once again, drilling holes chipped out the melamine coating on the pegboard so I sanded that smooth (and removed most of the white melamine coating for color uniformity).Drawer Organizer for Driver Bits. #storage #organization #workshop

I glued a strip of thin wood around the perimeter of the pegboard and glued that to the 1/2″ plywood base.  This strip created a little extra height to insert the bit shanks into so they don’t wobble.  Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

My glue-up weights.Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

The blank area to the left of the pegboard is for even longer bits which will lay horizontally in this space so I needed a back to keep them from rolling OUT of their home.Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

I added a side divider to completely enclose them.Drawer Organizer for Driver Bits. #storage #organization #workshop

I glued and nailed the back divider onto the 1/2″ plywood bottom and then glued the bottom down so this portion so the bits didn’t lift up the entire storage piece when trying to remove them.  Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

Again, my drills are great weights for glue-ups.  I added a stack of scrap wood under the back of the drill to keep the weight even.Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.

I’m repeatedly surprised by how much of a time and sanity saver it is to utilize such a simple organizer.  Ever other day I ask myself why I didn’t do this 4 years ago.Drawer Organizer for Driver Bits. #storage #organization #workshop

I have some socket bits (that I don’t ever use but might someday so I better keep them) stored in a little clippy thing that I didn’t want to keep so I hand wrote the sizes of each bit next to it’s home.  Drawer Organizer for Driver Bits. #storage #organization #workshop

AND I hate how messy it looks so I ran out and bought myself a label maker for all my upcoming projects.  BUT I’m really proud of myself for leaving this as is and not redoing it with the label maker.  That’s kinda big for me and my perfectionistic tendencies.Drawer storage and organizer for driver bits.
