I stopped by my in-laws and my mother-in-law was at top form working in her kitchen. She had all the pots and pans all around the little counter space that she has used for decades to make delicious meals. As much as she likes to cook she seemed to be very frustrated with what she was doing.
I asked what was wrong?
She remarked that she didn’t want to upset anyone. Her kitchen just wasn’t working smoothly. It’s been slowly falling into disrepair and she didn’t have the heart to tell anyone that it was taking a lot of effort to cook her best meals.
She then she gave me the 10¢ tour of what had become her problems in her kitchen.
I found broken drawer glides, drawer bottoms falling off, kitchen cabinet handles missing or broken kitchen cabinet doors falling off the frames, cabinet hinges missing screws, the laminate peeling off her countertop, the kitchen faucet leaking , the cabinet finish peeling and list goes on.
I don’t know how she does what she does in the frantic kitchen environment she works in.
So what Kitchen Repairs are going to make the biggest impact?
Drawer Glides
Replacing the drawer glides with self-closing runners let her walk away from the drawers and they wouldn’t be in the way when she came back the same way to get another item.
Drawer Bottoms
This is obvious, but putting the loose and falling drawer bottoms back allowed her to USE her drawers and not try to shove items onto other drawers, which led to those bottoms coming loose from the extra weight.
Cabinet Hinges
Installing new screws and aligning the hinges got the doors moving smoothly. She was rigging the doors with clothes pins, wire and shoe laces. Now she’ll be able to close the cabinet door and be done with it.
Cabinet doors
Going along with the hinges, when I worked on the hinges I also reset the cabinet doors with new stops and cushions to keep the slamming noise to a minimum.
Kitchen Counter
I offered to replace the counter, but she’s have no part of it. Instead I removed the existing laminate and installed a new finish laminate layer over the existing plywood substrate that was in great condition considering it was made back in the sixties.
Cabinet Accessories
Because I wanted her to not have to work so hard getting her items out of the cabinets I added some pull out shelving systems and nice pullout lazy susan to help her back when she’s bent over looking for her favorite baking pan
Cabinet Pulls and Handles
Last but not least, I replaced the screw that attached the handles to the cabinets. Many were stripped and no longer held the drawer pulls to the drawer fronts. The same problem was happening with the cabinet pulls. Some of these had worn the hole down from being loose for so long that I had to fill some of the holes with materials to keep them from sliding back and forth after the new screws were put in.
It may not seem like a big project but when kitchen repairs are done right they can help make a badly performing kitchen into one the envy of the family.

It was also great to see her in full swing and a skip in her step when she got to use her kitchen with the new additions and repairs.
