Repurposed Metal Tins {Styled X3}

Repurposed metal tea tins become cute office storage containers! Check out this tutorial as part of the Styled X3 series.

Today I’m taking part in a fun series called Styled X3, the brainchild of Stacy from Not Just a Housewife. Basically, Stacy picks out an item and sends it to two other bloggers, and we each style it in our home. We can modify it or turn it into a DIY project if we want to, though it isn’t required. This is a monthly series over on her blog, so be sure to check it out! This month, Stacy, Laura from Finding Home Farms, and I, are styling a set of metal tins, which I’ve repurposed into office storage containers for my desk. This project is so quick and easy, and sometimes those types of projects are the most fun!

Here are the metal tins in their original state.

I decided to just do a simple makeover to turn them into cute desk storage by covering them in striped gift wrap.

Project Supplies:

Step 1

First, lay your tea tin down on your gift wrap and cut a strip that will fit around the tin, leaving a little bit of overhang at the top and bottom. (Repeat for each tin.)

 Step 2

Then, paint a vertical stripe of Mod Podge along the seam on the back of the tin. (Or apply a line of hot glue.) I decided not to Mod Podge the entire paper onto the tin since I always have a really hard time getting the paper to look smooth, especially on cylindrical or round surfaces. Instead, I applied the paper similarly to a soup can label.

Step 3

Next, wrap your gift wrap around the tin, starting and ending at the point where you’ve applied the Mod Podge or hot glue. Smooth it down with your fingers and allow to dry.

Step 4

Cut slits in the paper overhang you’ve left at the bottom of the tin, and use Mod Podge to adhere it to the bottom, pressing and smoothing it with your finger as you go. Turn the tin upside-down while it dries.

Step 5

Snip the excess paper around the top perimeter of the tin. Insert office supplies, and you’re done!
