It’s finally beginning to feel like fall here in the South, which means I’m finally ready to do some fall decorating. Today I’ll show you how to build and stencil your very own fall centerpiece! Of course you could modify my plans to make it any size you’d like, and also customize it with any colors or stencil pattern you choose. (FolkArt® has a TON to choose from!) I opted to go with two different shades of gray and an orange color, and I used a pretty fall leaf stencil.

Project Supplies:

  • 1×6 board at 8 ft. long
  • FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk (Colors: Parisian Grey, Maui Sand, and Monarch)
  • FolkArt® Home Decor Wax in Clear (or Varnish if you plan to use outside)
  • FolkArt® Stencil Value Pack in Forest
  • FolkArt® Chalk Brush
  • FolkArt® Wax Brush
  • 2 FolkArt® Stencil Brushes
  • Wood glue
  • Brad nailer (or hammer and nails)
  • Sanding block or sandpaper
  • Miter Saw (Circular saw or hand saw will work.)
  • Wood filler
  • Paper towel
  • Mini pumpkins and gourds (for filler)

I absolutely love FolkArt Home Decor Chalk! Such a great paint to work with.

Step 1

First, cut your 1×6 board into 3 pieces at 24″ long (for the sides and bottom), and 2 pieces at 4 3/4″ long (for the ends). Sand any sharp edges with a sanding block.

Step 2

Using wood glue and a brad nailer (or hammer and nails), attach your two sides to the bottom piece so they form a “U” shape. Then, slide the ends in place and attach them too.

Step 3

Use wood filler to patch your nail holes and also cover any knots in the wood that may bleed through later. When this dries, sand everything smooth.

Step 4

Using the FolkArt® Chalk brush, paint the entire box with FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk in Parisian Grey. Allow to dry.

Step 5

When the box is dry, use the leaf sheet from the FolkArt® Forest Stencil Value Pack and randomly stencil them onto the box, alternating colors between the “Maui Sand” and “Monarch” colors of FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk.

These FolkArt stencils are perfect for fall craft and DIY projects!

Be sure to use stencil brushes for this, and blot your brush onto a paper towel each time to avoid bleed through. You don’t want your brush to be over saturated.

Using a circular motion, go over your leaf while holding your stencil in place. (I wiped the stencil down with a baby wipe periodically.) Reposition your stencil, and repeat.

Step 6

When your paint is dry, apply a topcoat. You can use the FolkArt® Home Decor Wax if you are using your centerpiece inside. If it will be outside, I would use the FolkArt® Home Decor Varnish instead, and also drill some holes in the bottom for drainage.
